I have covered the theme of Sexuality by looking into the idea of manipulating and defacing the male gaze. Many of my influential photographers have used masks as a statement into their work and this always felt surreal to me as the omitting of the human face is a subconsciously foreign concept for most. Their reality feels alternate, yet only a small glitch away from ours. My Final Piece ‘Parallels’ was a massive steppingstone in terms of developing more conceptual ideas that holds deep symbolism and challenges the viewer. The reason why I titled my Final ‘Parallels’ is how when we please the male gaze, we slowly get consumed by them and we quickly become objectified and idolised in a damaging way. However, when this is challenged, they can feel threatened and find the concept of a powerful woman terrifying. My reasoning for integrating elements of religion in my third instalment was inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe’s quote that ‘beauty and the devil are the same thing’. A woman’s desire or pleasure is seen as a sin, according to The Seven Deadly Sins.
