I chose to investigate ergonomic design as my main theme, largely because I think there generally isn’t enough emphasis on this aspect of chairs and furniture today. I think that sometimes even higher end furniture focuses more on aesthetic and traditional look or feel than the ergonomic aspect. In an age where we spend so much time sitting, we shouldn’t just be comfortable but also be healthy. I also wanted to incorporate an element of traditional Japanese woodworking, because I was very impressed at how traditional Japanese buildings are built without any artificial fixtures like glue, nails or screws, yet they can last hundreds of years untouched, but they also have the ability to dismantle the building and put it back together for maintenance. I also researched into Tom Raffield’s work which was a great source of inspiration when it comes to wooden furniture. His work is very simple but it creates a comfortable and inviting feeling even just looking at it, so I tried to use his techniques to recreate this mood in my designs.
